Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs at Berkley First School

At Berkley First School, we are committed to meeting the needs of all our pupils, including those with special educational needs (SEN). We place a strong emphasis on delivering high-quality, inclusive teaching that supports every learner and promotes high expectations for all.

Quality first teaching, with thoughtful differentiation, is our starting point in supporting children who have, or may have, additional needs. The Senior Leadership Team regularly monitors the standard of teaching, especially for pupils who may be at risk of underachievement. This includes evaluating staff knowledge of effective strategies to support vulnerable learners and their understanding of the most common special educational needs.

All teachers are responsible and accountable for the progress and development of every child in their class, including those receiving support from teaching assistants or specialist staff. When a pupil is not making expected progress, the class teacher and SENDCo work closely with parents to problem-solve together, plan targeted support, and tailor teaching strategies to meet the child’s individual needs.
