Intent

At Berkley School we aim to develop thinkers of the future through a modern and ambitious computing curriculum. We want pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to become confident, active participants in the digital world.

Children learn to use technology to express themselves, support their learning, and shape their future. We promote safe, respectful, and responsible use of technology, helping pupils understand both the benefits and risks of online experiences.

Our curriculum balances deep knowledge with practical digital skills, and we provide opportunities for pupils to apply their learning across the wider curriculum.

Implementation

At our school, computing is taught through the Purple Mash scheme of work, providing a fun, engaging and well-structured approach to digital learning. Pupils develop skills in coding, online safety, digital creativity and information technology through progressive, hands-on lessons. Online safety is embedded throughout, with clear class rules, dedicated units and participation in Safer Internet Day, and parents are regularly updated with guidance to support learning at home on the weekly newsletter.

Pupils develop the skills to use technology confidently, safely, and effectively. They learn key vocabulary and concepts, apply their knowledge across subjects, and reflect on their progress through self-assessment and end-of-unit evaluations.

Our computing curriculum supports wider personal development, including problem-solving, teamwork, leadership, and digital citizenship.

What We Teach

Our computing curriculum gives children a strong foundation in coding, online safety, digital literacy and understanding technology. Pupils learn to create and test simple programs, solve problems and explore how digital systems work through practical, engaging activities. Online safety is taught progressively, helping children to stay safe, communicate respectfully and act responsibly online. Children use a range of digital tools to create, present and share their learning across the curriculum, while developing an understanding of how technology is used in the wider world. They also learn to collect, organise and interpret data using simple tools.

How We Teach It

We are well-equipped with a bank of laptops and iPads, which are used regularly in lessons. Computing is taught both as a standalone subject and as a tool to enhance learning across the curriculum. This ensures that children not only develop specific computing skills but also learn how to apply them in meaningful ways.
